What are Hearts & Arrows?

Heart and Arrow cut diamonds are the most optically precise brilliant-cut diamonds and belong to the top 1% of round-cut diamonds. This pattern displays eight arrows when the diamond points upwards and eight hearts when it points downwards. This symbolizes both the high symmetry of the gemstones and the impressive symbolism of Cupid. A Hearts & Arrows diamond is marked accordingly on its diamond certificate .

In the 1980s, Japanese diamond cutters were the first to cut round brilliant-cut diamonds with such precision that their facet reflections overlapped in 3D space, creating uniform patterns when viewed through reflective lenses. These cutters used "secret recipes" to create the pattern of "hearts"—a combination of reflections circled in red below—when looking at the pavilion, and "arrows"—reflections of the eight main pavilion facets visible through the table and bezel—in the crown when viewed with the table facing upwards.

Is the production of Hearts & Arrows diamonds more expensive?

Yes, primarily due to the weight loss during the refining process. Achieving the high optical precision of Hearts and Arrows is a demanding process. All facets must be aligned three-dimensionally in terms of angle and orientation. This requires better tools, more time, and, most importantly, a greater weight loss from the original diamond crystal. The advantage lies in the ability to optimize light transmission through cut consistency, coupled with suitable angles for light reflection, and improved perceived scattering by optimizing the size of the diamond's or composite mirror's internal reflections.
